THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/constitution/germany

27/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - Werner Langen MEP (CDU) has described the initiative by the CSU delegate at the Bundestag, Mr Gauweiler, at the German Constitutional Court, who said that the Bundestag was not able to vote on the European Constitution, because the changes this would involve would mean demanding a referendum, as “not very credible”. While awaiting the verdict from the Karlsruhe Court, Mr Gauweiler requested a change to the agenda to prevent the Bundestag from discussing on 12 and 13 May, the law for approving the Constitution. Mr Langen, who is contesting the arguments put forward by Mr Gauweiler to undermine the Constitutional Treaty, said in a press release that the Court was not going to stop the vote at the Bundestag. The vote at the Bundestag is planned for June. The Constitution will have to obtain a majority in two thirds of the two chambers.
