27/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - British Conservative Gay Mitchell withdrew his report on development cooperation and economic cooperation financing from the agenda of the plenary on 27 April, recommending that the European Commission's proposal on this subject should be rejected. The key problems raised by this proposal, he said in a press release are: - marginalisation of the role and the powers of Parliament; and - the fact of “merging together in an unnatural alliance two policy domains (economic cooperation and development cooperation) with quite distinct finalities and work methods, to the detriment of development cooperation”. An EP/Commission/Council technical working group was set in place, Mr Mitchell recalls saying that, although the last meeting on Tuesday had shown that the concessions made to Parliament were not sufficient, “progress appears to be possible” and it is therefore worth putting the discussion off till plenary to “bring the process forward”.
