13/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Commission, which at the end of March received notification of the proposed acquisition of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL) by its Spanish counterpart, BBVA, has until 3 May to determine whether the dossier requires a detailed investigation. The operation is likely to be treated by simplified procedure, a spokesperson said on Wednesday, as the two banks are active on separate geographical markets. This procedure is used when the affair does not create any serious doubts and does not require a detailed inquiry. The Italian competition authorities can, however, still call on the Commission to refer the matter to them, if competition is threatened on their territory, which would extend the decision by ten days. In the case of the bid from the Dutch bank, ABN AMRO, on Antonveneta, the deadline is 4 May.
