THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/ukraine/russia

13/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday in Moscow that Russia can but be "pleased" about the possibility of Ukraine one day joining the EU. "If Ukraine wants to enter the European Union and if the EU is willing to take it in, then we have everything to be pleased about", Mr Putin said after his meeting with Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. "The question of the EU one day enlarging to Ukraine does not concern us, although we do of course have our opinion on the matter", Mr Putin added, specifying that Russia had always looked at European Union enlargement in a positive light, contrary to NATO enlargement that does not correspond to today's "modern challenge". The Spanish Prime Minister pointed out that "EU extension to Ukraine is not on the agenda".
