09/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Following the agreement on Thursday evening in Kiev between the two sides, the president of the European Parliament Josep Borrell expressed his satisfaction at the "efforts made to settle the crisis". Borrell asserted that the Ukrainian people "by camping out in the cold and snow, night and day" have said no to the second round of presidential elections that were tarnished by serious irregularities and, "I am delighted that they have been heard". The president also noted that the European Parliament had by a very large majority adopted the indispensable reforms for restoring peace in the two camps which as an encouraging sign. He welcomed the very important role of mediation played by Javier Solana and announced that on 26 December the European Parliament would be sending a delegation of observers to Ukraine to "monitor, very actively" the new elections.
