Brussels, 09/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - MEPs from the Margherita group Lapo Pistelli, Alfonso Andria, Luigi Cocilovo, Paolo Costa, Enrico Letta, Vittorio Prodi and Patrizia Toia are calling on the European Commission to "promote immediate initiatives" to prevent the closure of the Thyssen Krupp steel works from closing at Terni in the south of Italy. The MEPs point out that the Thyssen Krupp group had made commitments over recent months to protect local jobs and launch a vast restructuring plan. They also point out in the press release that despite funding received from the European Union, the situation has got worse, with the threatened closure of the factory that produces magnetic steel, steel whose ration between quality and cost is on of the lowest in Europe. The MEPs announced that they would do their best to introduce the issue of industrial re-conversion at the plenary for sites like Terni.
