Brussels, 09/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - During the mini-session last week in Brussels, the European Parliament followed the line of Dutch Socialist Edith Mastenbroek, its rapporteur on setting up a multi-annual programme to promote safer use of internet and on-line technologies (The Safer Internet Plus) by highlighting the importance of raising children's awareness and that of their parents to the dangers on the internet. By reaching a decision in the first reading (co-decision) on this programme, which takes over from the safer internet action plan of 1998-2004, MEPs want to see the limited resources of the programme used to fund initiatives in which the private sector does not usually invest. This will be done through measures to fight against illegal content and raise awareness among end-users, particularly children and their parents.
