Brussels, 09/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a press release Rebecca Harms MEP, German Green, attacked the nuclear technological cooperation agreement between the EU and China, concluded at The HAGUE Summit (EUROPE yesterday p 4). MS Harms stated that this agreement, "sends out entirely the wrong signal…Rather than investing…in economically and ecologically questionable projects…the European Union would do better to promote renewable energies. China commands huge resources of coal and gas and uses nuclear energy to meet only 2% of its energy needs. The situation should remain that way" (on the subject of nuclear energy in the world EUROPE yesterday p 15). According to Harms, the Chinese government should set the gaol of using renewable energies to provide 12% of its energy consumption before 2020 and that it was in this field that cooperation and technology transfers were most needed.
