Proposed tariff of 230 EUR/tonne is necessary to maintain current market share, says Mr Lamy

Brussels, 29/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Commissioner for Trade, Pascal Lamy, on Friday defended the proposal of 230 EUR/tonne which the European Commission put on the table this week for the import tariff for bananas onto the EU market as of 1 January 2006. I line with WTO requirements, the new tariff regime must replace the current quota system which establishes quotas for Community producers, ACP producers and Latin American producers.
