Brussels, 22/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - the Maltese producers of "Kunserva" will continue to receive production aid. This produce still has to meet the traditional recipe conditions, which the European Commission detailed in a regulation in Official Journal L 219 on 19 June. Kunserva is, "the product obtained by concentrating tomato juice, obtained directly from fresh tomatoes, containing added sugar and salt, having a dry matter content of 28% to 36% packed in hermetically sealed containers labelled "Kunserva". The only ingredients that can be added to the juice are: common salt (sodium chloride, natural spices and aromatic herbs. The regulation also explains that, ""sugar shall be added, representing between 8% and 25% by weight of the finished product". The recipe also requires that ascorbic acid can be used "in the manufacture of tomato juice with a dry weight of less than 7%. However, in the manufacture of tomato concentrate in powder form, the silicon dioxide content shall not exceed 1% by weight of the finished product.
