Strasbourg, 22/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - British Labour member Terry Davis is to be the next Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the pan-European organisation composed of 45 Member States. He will succeed Austrian Christian Democrat Walter Schwimmer. His term of office runs for five years. Elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, on Tuesday in Strasbourg, Terry Davis won 157 votes from the first round compared to 91 for Walter Schwimmer and 51 for Kristina Ojuland, Estonia's Foreign Minister. Aged 66, Terry Davis has been a member of the Parliamentary Assembly for twelve years and President of the Socialist Group since 2002. He will take up his post on 1 September 2004.
