22/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - Turkish Minister for Religious Affairs Mehmet Aydin, who was in Barcelona for a confrerence on Turkey, considers that the "general climate is extremely positive" for reaching a decision at the European Council in December on opening negotiations for Turkey's EU membership. Mr Aydin even expressed his ambition in an interview with the Spanish daily El Pais for Turkey to "obtain an overall plan (…) for concluding the whole process by, for example, 2010 or 2012". The new Austrian President, Heinz Fischer, who will take up his duties on 8 July, said the European Union is not ready to take Turkey in. "I clearly say that we cannot for now bear the (weight of) Turkey's accession", he told the Turkish daily Aksam. On the other hand, the Spanish Secretary of State for European Affairs, Alberto Navarro, said at the Barcelona conference that he considers Turkey could join the EU by 2014, according to reports by the Turkish agency, AA.
