Member States do not take stance on GT73 oilseed rape

Brussels, 16/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday afternoon, Member States were unable to reach qualified majority required for marketing approval of Monsanto's genetically modified oilseed rape, GT73, as proposed by the Commission. (See yesterday's EUROPE, p.13). There were only 43 votes in favour of approval, with 57 against, and 24 abstentions. In coming weeks, the Commission will formally adopt a proposal that will then be submitted to the Council of Ministers, which will have the responsibility of deciding whether to adopt or reject it. If no decision is taken after three months, the file returns to the Commission which can then adopt it.
