THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/pes/political groups

16/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - Interviewed by Le Monde on Tuesday on the subject of the Socialist Group leadership at the new European Parliament, Pervenche Berès, outgoing president of the French Socialists at the EP (which, after the European elections on 13 June became the largest delegation at the PES), affirmed that "we have nothing against Martin Schulz' candidature to the head of the group. As for possible coalitions between groups, Ms Berès said the "power struggle between the EPP and PES groups is not clear until we know what François Bayrou's UDF will do, if it remains in the EPP or joins a centrist group (…). What is clear is that one can foresee a major coalition between the two large groups if it is a matter of sharing the Parliament presidency over two periods (…). It is excluded, however, - at any rate for us French Socialists ) that there can be an agreement on a political line. Majorities must be sought for each text".
