Brussels, 16/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - Services under Competition Commissioner Mario Monti will be recommending closure of the review proceedings that they had opened on 29 October last regarding measures in favour of the publishing sector in Italy, and will conclude whether or not such aid is compatible with the Community State aid regime. According to Tilman Lueder, Mr Monti's spokesman, the Commission was able to ascertain that the measures have only a very slight impact on intra-Community trade as, according to the figures, products in the Italian language are not widely distributed outside Italy. The Commission also notes that the aid may stimulate a whole sector that is in difficulty in Italy as it takes advantage of all written and audiovisual media by promoting modernisation of equipment as well as the attractiveness of the content. The College of Commissioners is expected to approve the proposal by end June.
