Eurocities says Lisbon objectives can only be attained by greater involvement of large cities

Brussels, 25/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a letter addressed to Heads of State and governments of the enlarged Europe, relating to the Brussels Summit, the network of major European cities, Eurocities sent the following message, "the ambitious objectives defined in the strategy of Lisbon, in terms of economic competitiveness, employment, social integration and sustainable development, can only be attained with the active involvement of the cities". The Eurocities president (who is also the Mayor of Leipzig), Wolfgang Tiefensee, declared "We are convinced that by cooperating closely, cities and regions, national governments and EU institutions will be able to take significant steps towards the Lisbon and Gothenburg objectives, and thus contribute to the development of a more sustainable and prosperous Europe, founded on cohesion and integration".
