Pat Cox, to receive Charlemagne Prize on 20 May, attends award ceremony of extraordinary Charlemagne Prize to Pope at Vatican

Brussels, 25/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox, will be awarded the Charlemagne Prize in Aix-la-Chapelle on 20 May, in recognition of his contribution to European integration and to the EU's "historical" enlargement on 1 May, according to a press release.

This year, an extraordinary Charlemagne Prize has also been awarded to Pope John Paul II, for a life devoted "the service of humanity and world peace", states the same press release. President Cox took part in the ceremony in the Vatican on 24 March, noting that the Polish Pontiff has been "a chief architect of this new Europe that is emerging: a Europe at peace with itself and with others, founded on shared values and united at last".
