Demands for asylum in accession countries 7 times higher over last 14 years - fall of asylum seekers in EU in 2003 down by a quarter

Brussels, 01/03/2004 (Agence Europe) - The number of asylum seekers continues to fall in the European Union and rise in accession countries. In 2003 around 288,000 new demands made in Member States, almost 22% less than in 2002, according to the most recent date provided by the High Commission of the United Nations for Refugees. On the other hand, the number of requests for asylum in accession countries continued to rise. Numbers rose from 5,310 in 1990 to 37,310 in 2003, seven times higher...
