04/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - Preparations for Slovakia's accession in preparation for membership on 1 May 2004 are "perfectly on track" and there is a "very, very strong convergence of views" between Bratislava and the European Commission on IGC, Commission President Romano Prodi told the press on Wednesday after a meeting in Brussels with the Slovakian Prime Minister, Mikulas Dzurinda. Mr Dzurinda confirmed the good state of preparedness of his country ("we hope to be ready for 1 May"), but contradicted President Prodi concerning the IGC, and mores specifically on qualified majority vote in Council. Slovakia is now in favour of keeping to the provisions of the Nice Treaty (although it had earlier urged for double majority 60%/60%), while being "aware of the need to find a compromise" during next week's Summit.
