Brussels, 07/11/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission will "very calmly and objectively" examine the merger between BMG, the music subsidiary of the German group, Bertelsmann, and Sony Music, a subsidiary of the Japanese firm, Sony, as soon as it receives notification of this operation, the spokesperson for competition, Amelia Torres, said. The Commission, however, does not expect imminent notification as the agreement between the parties has still to be finalised. Bertelsmann and Sony announced last Thursday that they planned to merge their musical activities within a joint venture that they would hold equally. Sony Music is currently the global number two of the sector and MBG number five.
