EU concerned at increase in non-tariff barriers

Brussels, 23/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a document published on Wednesday in Beijing, the Chamber of Commerce of the EU in China is concerned at what it sees as the tendency of the Chinese authorities to multiply non-tariff barriers, which can seriously complicate the operations of European companies in the country. The preferential treatment of Chinese firms, the persistent non-respect of intellectual property rights and the lack of transparency in legislative procedures have been highlighted in the 345 pages the group is to submit to the Ministry of Trade in Beijing and to the European Commission, ahead of the Summit meeting of 30 October, and the hearings to continue in Geneva for the rest of the year on the implementation of China's conditions of membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
