Committee on Civil Liberties authorised to report on freedom and pluralism of press, "especially in Italy"

Strasbourg, 23/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - The Chairmen's Conference of the political groups of the European Parliament decided in Strasbourg on Thursday to authorise the Committee on Civil Liberties to write an initiative report on "the risks of infringement to fundamental liberties in the European Union and especially in Italy, in terms of freedom of expression and of information, as targeted in particular by article 11§2 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU ("the freedom and pluralism of the media shall be respected")"; The political groups agreed on a title, proposed by the Spanish Chairman of the Socialist group, Enrique Baron, which covers the whole Union but mentions Italy. As requested by the EPP-ED group, the report will be based on the Charter of Fundamental Rights rather than article 7 of the Treaty, which mentions the principle of the competency of the constitutional commission.
