23/10/2003 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption, on Thursday, of the report by British Labour member Catherine Stihler, the European Parliament introduced greater flexibility into the proposal of a plan for recovery of cod stocks. The European Commission rejected most of the EP's amendments. The spokesperson for Commissioner Fischler explained to EUROPE that the Commission, which has still to make a detailed analysis of the scientists' recommendations, could either present amendments to the current proposal on the recovery of cod stocks, or adopt a new proposal taking the current situation, which is more dramatic than that of 2002, into account.
