Brussels, 24/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - In a press statement, the International Federation of Human rights Leagues (FIDH) and the Iranian League for the Defence of Human Rights (LDDHI) called on the international community and the Italian Presidency to apply pressure so that human rights were respected in Iran. The FIDH and the LDDHI are calling for the setting up of an international independent and impartial investigation mission to be set up, consisting of doctors and legal experts to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the death of Zahra Kazemi, the Iranian-Canadian photographer, arrested last June during student demonstrations by the militia controlled by the Prosecutor General in Tehran, Saïd Mortazavi. She was transferred in a coma to hospital a few days after her arrest and died from a brain haemorrhage sustained by blows to the head. According to the organisations, no-one is currently aware what has happened to the body. According to the FIDH and the LDDHI, numerous student leaders and journalists have been arrested by the same militia and are currently being detained at undisclosed addresses. A further 2,000 people are currently being held out of the 4,000 people arrested following the demonstrations, which is in breach of international law. The organisations are demanding the immediate release of those being detained and the guarantee of a fair trail for those who are facing genuine charges. The FIDH and the LLDHI is also requesting that the Prosecutor General of Tehran, Saïd Mortazavi, is suspended from his duties and that an investigation is opened into his militia's reign of terror during the demonstrations, as well as into the detention centres for which he is responsible and where Ms Kazemi could have been tortured.
