Brussels, 24/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - Following a tour of four Arab countries (Egypt, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman), the President of the EPP-ED group at the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering (CDU), said the United Nations should have a greater role in Iraq. He said this was vital to establish a climate of confidence among the local population, which because of their experience of Saddam Hussein's regime, feared that the water supplied by the coalition troops would be contaminated. Welcoming the moves towards democracy in Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, Pöttering said the reforms should be encouraged in the EU's political dialogue with the three countries.
