Investigation into ABX Logistics

Brussels, 24/07/2003 (Agence Europe) - Aid granted to the ABX Logistics group, which is part of Belgian State Railways (SNCB) is being investigated. The European Commission has decided to launch formal proceedings to establish whether the restructuring measures constitute a breach of Community rules. ABX operates road, air and maritime transport services and provide logistics services for the SNCB, a company owned by the Belgian State. The funding in question is a one-year bridging loan of €140 million and the conversion into capital of ABX'S debt amounting to €91,6 million. The Commission will examine in particular whether the proposed aid measures will enable ABX to return to sustainable viability, whether they will have any effect on competition, and the adequacy of the amount. The Commission has also decided to examine other funding granted to ABX in recent years and the acquisition by Belgian State Railways of ABX Logistics' global network.
