Brussels, 17/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - EU agriculture ministers negotiations over reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in Brussels on Monday did not make any breakthroughs. The Presidency and the Commission, however, would like the reforms to be decided in June. Only the UK, Denmark, Sweden and, to a lesser extent, Germany, support most of the elements of the Commission's package. Most countries favour an extension of the dairy quota system until 2015 and feel that the proposals put froward are premature. Italy and Denmark have called for dairy quotas to be ended after 2008. With a few exceptions (the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark), most countries strongly criticised the 5% reduction in the cereal intervention price. Sweden even called for cereal aid to be scrapped. Countries defending particular interests argued that the scrapping of intervention aid for rye was too abrupt (Germany, Finland and the Netherlands) and disagreed with the proposals on durum wheat (Portugal, Greece, France and particularly Italy).
