Parliament requests free and fair elections

Strasbourg, 17/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - In its adoption on Thursday of a resolution on Cambodia with a view to the legislative elections of 27 July, the EP condemns the acts of violence and intimidation taking place in the run-up to the elections, and invites the government to guarantee free and fair elections, with no intimidation or harassment, to respect freedom of expression and religion and to go back on its decision to ban Christian groups from public religious propaganda. It has criticised the government's unilateral and unexpected decision to close all border crossing points with Thailand, and is pleading in favour of getting relations between the two countries back to normal. The EP invites the Cambodian authorities to take all necessary measures to end bodily harm of children and child prostitution, and to co-operate fully with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to protect the Montagnard minority.
