Javier Solana welcomes George Bush's announcement on "road map"

Brussels, 17/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana has welcomed the unexpected announcement of George Bush's intentions of publishing the final version of the Quartet's "road map" on the Middle East (EU, UN, United States, Russia), as soon as there is a Palestinian Prime Minister with "real authority". The creation of the post of Prime Minister, like the formation of a new Israeli government, offers "new opportunities for progress, that should not be missed", emphasises the High Representative for CFSP, pointing out that the EU wants the "road map" published as soon as possible, and hopes that the members of the Quartet will commit to serious talks on the basis of the road map. In Jerusalem, however, the Sharon government is preparing a hundred or so amendments to the text and, according to the newspaper Ha'aretz, will suggest in particular changing "independent" state into "endowed (with certain attributes of sovereignty)" state.
