07/02/2003 (Agence Europe) - Questioned by his critics, Mr Peter Hain pointed out that the first draft Articles of the future Constitution did not reflect consensus a the European Convention work groups. Vice President Giuliano Amato believed this was due to misunderstandings. He therefore explained that as indicated in a footnote, the integration of the Charter of Fundamental Rights would be done with adaptations proposed by the work group on the Charter. As for the absence to a religious reference in the initial draft Articles, Mr Amato indicated that the Presidium thought that these Articles could not represent the fundamental values of the Union that should be respected unanimously and respected by the Union and Member States as foreseen in the current Article 7 of the treaty. He indicated that if there had been a religious reference this could have perhaps been inserted into the preliminary.
