Strasbourg, 17/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Parliament awarded the Sakharov 2002 Prize for Freedom of Thought to the Cuban dissident, Oswaldo José Payà Sardinas, who managed to rally the support of about one hundred organisations in Cuba and the signature of tens of thousands of people to the Varela project (a legislative initiative for the organisation of a referendum on free elections, freedom of speech, freedom for political prisoners and free enterprise).
