Margot Wallström welcomes ratification of Kyoto Protocol by Canada

Brussels, 17/12/2002 (Agence Europe) - Canada's ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, announced on Tuesday, was welcomed by Commissioner Margot Wallstöm. Under terms of the Protocol, Canada will have to reduce its greenhouse gases by 6% between 2008-2012 (as opposed to 8% for the Union) compared to the 1990 level.

Up to now, 97 countries have ratified the Kyoto Protocol. Only Russia's ratification is needed for the Protocol to enter into force.
