COMECE would like reference to "God"

Brussels, 31/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on 28 October, the President of the Commission of the Bishops' Conference of the European Community (COMECE), Mgr Josef Homeyer, hopes that it will be possible to include a "reference to God" in the future European Constitution "that would be acceptable to both believers and non-believers". Bishop Homeyer referred to this hope to the President of the EPP, Wilfried Martens, in a letter in which he also welcomed the proposals the EPP adopted in Estoril. The press release cites the following passages: - Europe should transform into practical action its moral duty of solidarity with poorer countries; - the Union respects the spiritual traditions and cultural, linguistic and legal diversities of its Member states; - the preamble to the Constitution must recall what Europe owes to its religious heritage. (See yesterday's EUROPE page 5 for Messrs. Friedrich's and Wuemeling's initiatives).
