Jacques Chirac wants more information on crisis from Commission and Presidency

Brussels, 31/10/2002 (Agence Europe) - After having raised the question at the Brussels Summit (see EUROPE 28-29 November p 11), Jacques Chirac wrote to President Prodi and Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Thursday, warning them of the situation in the European telecommunications sector. In his letter, he mentions his acute worries about the "deep crisis" facing the sector. "We cannot remain indifferent to this situation, I believe that it is time to act and do so on a European scale", he writes, adding that, "the Commission has a very important role to play in this respect, beginning with the analysis of the problems encountered and the requests made by operators, it must be able to send the Council proposals in view of a co-ordinated response that is rapid and effective at a European level". On the subject of UMTS, Mr Chirac was of the opinion that "we have to particularly examine the solutions together that will allow us to create the most propitious conditions for the success of the technology that remains, like the entire telecommunications sector, a key area for Europe's future". He also expressed a wish that reflections on this subject would see Commission proposals presented to the European Council next March.
