Parliament against report on banning trade in cosmetic products tested on animals

Strasbourg, 24/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the Parliament adopted by unanimity, during its plenary session in Strasbourg, a resolution on the report for banning the sale of cosmetic products tested on animals. This ban, which should have come into force on 1 July 2002, has been postponed by the Commission. German Social Democrat, Dagmar Roth-Behrendt, who had presented the draft resolution, exclaimed that the Commission could not postpone the entry into force of this directive again. "Legislation is required on the subject", she believed, adding that, "in the framework of committee procedures, the Commission is going to try and push the entry into force of this ban back by six months". Ms Roth-Berendt warned that this would be illegal and they would go to the Court of Justice if necessary. Environment Commissioner, Margot Wallström explained the situation by the fact that a conciliation procedure was underway ad that the Commission was expecting the procedure to soon end. "In the context of conciliation procedure, we will find a satisfactory solution for everyone", she concluded.
