24/09/2002 (Agence Europe) - During a press conference on the margin of the plenary session in Strasbourg, British Conservative James Elles said he had the support of his Group for the amendment that proposes placing in reserve funds intended for Commissioners' travel expenses until the Commission has clearly answered the allegations of Ms Andreasen and explained the reasons which led to her appointment. He affirmed that this is not a motion of censure in disguise but the normal use of the Parliament's budgetary powers to obtain clarification of the implementation of reforms which had been requested by the Committee of the Wise at the time when the Santer Commission fell. Answering questions on the chances of such an amendment in plenary, given the opposition of several other groups, he considered it logical that the Socialists would want to rescue their own Commissioner (Ed.: Mr Kinnock), but felt that other groups could rally to his proposal.
