Clearance for Time's takeover of British publisher IPC

Brussels, 15/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has authorised Time, the subsidiary of the American company AOL Time Warner, to acquire exclusive control of IPC, the main magazine publisher in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The preliminary inquiry showed that the project would neither create nor strengthen a dominant position on the magazine market, either for magazine readership or for the sale of advertising space, either in the United Kingdom or in Ireland. The Commission also studied the impact that the operation would have on the market for provision of Internet services by AOLTW in the United Kingdom. It concludes that the link between IPC's consumer magazine business and the AOL Time Warner's Internet access business would not give rise to the creation of a dominant position on these markets. In the United Kingdom, there is no separate demand for on-line consumer magazines. In addition, consumer magazines are largely sold in the UK via newsagents rather than via on-line subscriptions.
