Brussels, 15/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Transport Commissioner, Loyola de Palacio, has written to the US Secretary of State for Transport, Norman Mineta, asking for details of the price cuts offered by US airlines for transatlantic flights. The Commissioner's spokesperson, Gilles Gantelet, signalled that it would be "unacceptable" if it should emerge that US airlines were using the state aid announced by the federal authorities to cut prices. Referring to information supplied to her by European airlines at the AEA meeting on Friday (see EUROPE of 13 October, p.12), the Commissioner asked Norman Mineta to take all necessary measures to end these practices and proposes an urgent meeting with him.
