Brussels, 10/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has agreed to adopt as it stands a report by Juan Ojeda Sanz (EEP/ED Spain) on a Regulation designed to modernise EU rules for producing Community rail statistics figures. The new Regulation updates rules that have been applied since 1980 so that it now covers goods transport and takes account of the sector's restructuring process in its list of rail administrations. Presented in first reading, the Ojeda Sanz report recommends five amendments focused in particular on: 1) the requirement to produce statistics on investments in infrastructure networks, 2) the requirement to draw a distinction between international, national, intercity and interregional trains in statistics on the number of passenger trains, 3) excluding metro and other urban rail systems from the scope of the Regulation.
