10/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - After its emergency debate, and the adoption of a resolution on Afghan refugees from the Tampa, the EP deplores the fact that the coastal States (Australia and Indonesia) did not immediately intervene to solve the problem. It welcomes the decision by New Zealand and Nauru to give temporary care for 150 and 183, respectively, of the 436 refugees on board the Tampa. The EP invites the EU to take the measures necessary to make it an obligation, for the coastal States of seas where such situations arise, to help the shipwrecked and to ensure that they are treated in compliance with the procedures established by the international Convention of 1951 on the status of refugees.
