09/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - The adoption of a report by Generoso Andria (Forza Italia) reflects the European Parliament's approval of the idea of amending the draft Regulation on the financial support mechanism for the Member States' medium-term balance of payment situations (see EUROPE of 30 August, p.6). The Commission has been proposing to cut the mechanism's value from Euro 16 to 12 billion. Solely non-Euro countries still qualify for the mechanism. The amendments specify that the cut should take account of future enlargements and stress the need for the Parliament to be more involved in managing the mechanism.
