EP insists on transparency in elections

Strasbourg, 10/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - After its emergency debate, with the adoption of a resolution on the situation in Cambodia, the EP deplored the restrictions imposed on the activities of the opposition and the systematic use of political violence. It called for a commitment from the authorities that they would abstain from all acts of intimidation against the democratic opposition and guarantee the democratic unfolding of elections scheduled for February 2002. The EP calls on the EU to send an observer mission to cover the elections in Cambodia, and to set in place a programme aimed at "educating voters and training electoral agents and the candidates to the parties". The EP also commits the Cambodian government to finalise the memorandum of understanding with the United Nations, on the special tribunal that will judge the Khmers Rouges, as soon as possible. The Parliament finally calls on the Cambodian government to take measures against illegal woodcutting and invites the Commission to help it assess the risks for the environment of deforestation that could lead to an ecological disaster such as a succession of destructive flooding followed by drought.
