10/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday, the Belgian Finance Minister Didier Reynders said that economic growth in the Eurozone should be "around 2% in 2001", thereby confirming the downward projections for economic growth. Didier Reynders recognised that he was now expecting the "low range" of forecasts (between 2% and 2.5%) made by Eurogroup at the beginning of the year. He explained that the disappointing results of the second quarter had led to the growth forecasts being scaled back. Mr Reynders explained that the European Commission, which will shortly be publishing its own forecasts, would also be predicting 2% growth. Despite the alarming news from the financial markets and the weak economic climate in Germany, Mr Reynders said that the situation was more one of a dip before the economic takes off again rather than of recession, insisting that all forecasts point in the same direction - to growth taking off again next year.
