Ms de Palacio and Mr Deleuze welcome adoption of Renewable Energy Directive

Brussels, 10/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the Council formally adopted the Directive on promoting the use of energy from Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the internal market, thereby confirming the agreement reached with the EP in July after the conciliation procedure (see EUROPE of 6 July 2001, p. 13). The Energy Commissioner Loyola de Palacio and the President of the EU's Energy Council, Olivier Deleuze, were both pleased that the Directive would soon be coming into force since it would help the EU and its Member States to meet their commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. The Directive sets two overall objectives for 2010: to increase the share of gross internal energy consumption at Community level from 6% to 12% and for 22.1% of electricity consumed to be produced from RES.
