Parliament calls for Agboyibo's release

Strasbourg, 10/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution on Togo, the EP calls for the immediate release of the leader of the Action Committee for Renewal (one of the main opposition movements), Yawovi Agboyibo, who was condemned on 3 August to six months in prison for having "wounded the honour of the Prime Minister". It calls for the sentence to be deleted from his police record to allow him to be a normal candidate at the next elections. The EP insists that the legislative elections awaited by the Togolese people since early 2000 should be held, and reaffirms that the resumption of normal cooperation relations remains subject to substantial progress regarding the respect of democratic principles and human rights.
