New appeal to Russian authorities to stop human rights violations in Chechnya

Strasbourg, 18/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Lord Russell-Johnston, commented last week that the human rights situation in Chechnya has clearly worsened of late and that the conduct of Russian troops is largely responsible. Two recent "cleansing" operations in Assinovskaya and Sernovodsk come on top of Russia's failure to conduct investigations into inhumane treatment during the conflict.
