Brussels, 05/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The President of the United Left/Nordic Green Left Group, Francis Wurtz, has written to Nicole Fontaine to ask her to include on the agenda of next week's European Parliament plenary session, "preferably on Wednesday 14 March", the declarations by the Council and Commission over the Bush Administration's plan aimed at setting up a missile defence system (so far, Washington has used the terms NMD - National Missile Defence - but, in their latest interventions on the subject, American officials have dropped the word "national", and Colin Powell has guaranteed that not only would NATO allies be consulted, but also Russia and China: Ed.). The reactivation of the project risks leading to a new arms race at world level, says Mr. Wurtz, for whom "it is urgent that the Council expresses itself officially" on the subject, and that the European Parliament adopts a resolution on this "serious initiative".
