Brussels, 05/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The EP Environment Committee last week heard Tom Garvey, Head of the Baia Mare Task Force, created to analyse the causes of the Baia Mare accident which, last year, had caused serious pollution of the Danube, in Romania. Similar, accidents may also occur in both other candidate countries or the EU, asserts Mr Garvey, who underlined in particular that the different Directives presently applicable to similar sites should be replaced with a single Directive.
Moreover, the MEPs listened to a European Commission representative concerning the EUR 20,000 per day fine imposed on Greece last July by the Court of Justice for the uncontrolled elimination of waste in Crete. These practices continue, said the Commission representative.
