05/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - At the end of the plenary in Brussels, last Thursday, the European Parliament adopted the report by Daniel Varela Suanzes-Carpegna (EPP, Spanish) approving the draft regulation on technical measures to protect juvenile marine organisms. Only one amendment was adopted aiming to ensure that it will no longer be necessary to modify the provisions of this regulation with each change of address and telephone number by the authorities responsible in the Member States for the monitoring. These proposals modify, for the sixth time, the regulation, dating back to 1998, on the protection of juveniles. These new rules introduce clarifications or corrections notably over the creation of fishing zones and ban periods to protect marlin, the calculation of the live fishing weight of marine organisms, drag net fishing or even the unloading of damaged tortoises. (See EUROPE of 3 March, p.13, concerning votes on other reports concerning fisheries policy).
