Chirac in favour of "deeper cooperation", notably in field of defence

Paris, 31/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a speech at the Elysée on Tuesday, President Chirac said that, in the EU, no one should prevent "audacious advances", stating: "It is natural that in any group there should be leading pack that progresses more rapidly towards a commonly agreed objective. Defence seems to me to be a subject that lends itself naturally to deeper cooperation within a small group of States wanting to go further, faster (see below regarding the harmonising of the armaments...
